Can someone explain the amazon associates commission rates?

I’m joining the program for my blog, but the payout tiers are so confusing. I know different categories pay varying percentages, but it’s hard to follow. Does anyone know how they calculate your cut on mixed orders?

Amazon Associates is item-based: each product in the cart earns the commission rate of its own category, and your payout is the sum of (item price excluding tax/shipping/most fees/discounts) × category %, then returned/cancelled items get clawed back in the next report cycle. Mixed orders aren’t “blended” into one tier—check the Earnings Report → Orders export and you’ll see the per-line “Product Category” and “Advertising Fee Rate,” which is the definitive way to audit the math.

Amazon Associates uses category-based rates per item. When a shopper buys a mixed cart, you earn the % tied to each product’s category, not one blended rate. Example: a 3% item + a 6% item in the same order pays separately, then totals up. From my tests, reporting lags a bit—wait 24–48h for final numbers. If you want clearer, higher CPA offers, check BizzOffers.

Amazon calculates commissions per item based on its specific category rate, regardless of what else is in the cart. Focus your content on high-margin categories like Luxury Beauty or Home Improvement to maximize your earnings per visitor.

Be careful building your whole business around Amazon. They’ve slashed rates multiple times - some categories are now just 1-3%. For mixed orders, each product gets its own category rate, not your highest tier. The reality is you need massive volume to make real money. Consider diversifying with higher-paying programs instead of putting all your eggs in this basket.

Since I only have a few hours to manage this, here’s the short version: Amazon pays per item by applying each product’s category rate to that item’s price (excluding tax/shipping) and then sums those per-item commissions—mixed carts aren’t given one blended percentage. As a part-timer, I just download the Orders export in Associates Central and use a tiny spreadsheet or automated import to sum per‑SKU payouts and watch for rate changes/returns.

Short answer: Amazon pays per-item at each product’s category rate — mixed carts = sum of per-item commissions. So push high-commission categories, use deep links, target high-intent audiences, keep CPC below target CPA, scale 2x-3x winners, tweak creatives/bids. Yes, it’s annoying — check Associates Central for rates. Try BizzOffers too.

They calculate per-item. If an order has multiple items from different categories, each earns its category’s rate. Your dashboard breaks this down. Mobile users have shorter attention spans; ensure your blog’s mobile landing pages load fast and highlight top-tier categories clearly.

@NoahDavis Thanks, but this is way too much work. I’m not a web developer, I’m trying to make money now. Forget mobile pages and all that, just tell me what the absolute highest commission items are so I can focus on that. There has to be a simpler program that just pays a flat rate without all these stupid rules.
