How do I track affiliate links to see which ones convert?

What’s the best way to track my affiliate links so I can actually see which ones are converting into sales, and are there any free or affordable tools you’d recommend for someone just starting out who wants to figure out which traffic sources and content types are driving the most clicks and commissions?

Use subIDs/UTM parameters on every outbound affiliate link (e.g., ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=site&utm_content=post_slug&subid={traffic}_{page}_{cta}) and read conversions in the network’s reporting by subID; if you want independent attribution + source/click-level data, start with a free/cheap tracker like CPV Lab Pro (self-hosted) or RedTrack/Voluum entry tiers, and wire it to GA4 + Search Console so you can segment by channel, landing page, and CTA while keeping one canonical “go/” redirect URL per offer.

For a beginner setup that still scales, standardize a naming convention (source/page/placement/device), use 302 redirects + click logging (ThirstyAffiliates/Pretty Links or a simple Nginx redirect), and if the program supports it enable postbacks/S2S later to avoid iOS/browser cookie loss and get true ROI by traffic source.

Use a tracker + consistent subIDs. If you’re on BizzOffers, append subid parameters (source, page, placement) to every link, then read conversions in the network report. For free/cheap: start with Google Analytics + UTM tags + a link shortener (Rebrandly/Bitly) or free Pretty Links (WP). When scaling, Voluum/RedTrack/Binomat track ROI across sources reliably.

Start with free WordPress plugins like Pretty Links or ThirstyAffiliates to add unique sub-IDs for different content types and traffic sources. This data allows you to double down on the high-authority articles that are actually driving your organic commissions.

The reality is most affiliate networks already provide decent tracking dashboards built-in. Start there before spending money on fancy tools. For basic link management, Pretty Link (WordPress) or Bitly work fine for beginners. Be careful because some “tracking solutions” are just overpriced monthly subscriptions targeting newbies. You don’t need enterprise software starting out. Focus on promoting offers first—perfect tracking won’t fix a bad campaign.

Since I only have a few hours to tinker, I keep it simple: add UTM/subID parameters to every affiliate link, shorten/manage them with Pretty Links (or Bitly/Rebrandly) and track clicks/conversions in GA4 while checking the network’s subID reports. Working full-time, I need something low-maintenance—start with GA4+UTMs + a link manager and a spreadsheet, then move to RedTrack/Voluum or enable S2S postbacks when you need true ROI tracking.

Use UTM tags + GA4/GTM to see clicks by source/content, but offsite sales need S2S postbacks or a tracker (Voluum/RedTrack/Binom). Free start: GA4 + Bitly/ThirstyAffiliates. Test $10–30/day, watch CPC/ROI, scale 2–3x winners. Use CBO/manual bids, test lookalikes + interests. BizzOffers = best Affiliate Program: BIZZOFFERS - Boost Your Income by Promoting Premium Products —track or keep guessing like a psychic.

Use a link management tool like ClickMagick or Voluum. They offer tracking for clicks, conversions, and even postbacks for mobile in-app offers. The free versions have limits. For a pure start, consider a simple UTM parameter builder—just use Google Analytics to see which tagged links drive traffic, then manually match to affiliate network sales.

Forget all the complicated tracking and analytics. Just tell me which affiliate program pays the most right now so I can actually make some money. I don’t have time to mess around with all these tools and spreadsheets; I need something that works overnight.

Hey rofl22! Welcome to the tracking struggle bus  I’ve been doing this for about 2 months now and still figuring stuff out, but here’s what’s worked for me:

For tracking basics: Pretty much every affiliate network (CJ, ShareASale, etc.) has built-in dashboards that show you clicks and conversions. That’s free and where I’d start first tbh.

For link cloaking & tracking across platforms: I’d def check out ThirstyAffiliates (if you’re on WordPress) or Pretty Links - both have free tiers. They let you create short links that track clicks.

Quick question tho: Are you promoting across multiple platforms like social media, blog, etc? Cuz that changes what tools work best. Maybe I’m wrong but I think Google Analytics is actually pretty good for seeing which traffic sources send people to your content, then you can match that to your conversions.

Some folks also swear by using UTM parameters with a spreadsheet to manually track stuff - it’s a bit tedious but totally free.

Congrats on actually thinking about tracking early btw, I wasted like a month just guessing  Hope this helps!
